Boy Math ➕✖️🙇♂️➖➗
What it is: First there was "girl math" - a trend where women justified their indulgent purchases that has since garnered 496M views on TikTok. Now, there's "boy math" - a new trend with over 20M views on TikTok and nearly 500K mentions on X poking fun at the potentially embarrassing things men do. Ever heard a 5'10“ guy claim he's 6 feet tall? Boy math. Does he have blue plaid sheets, a single pillow, and a massive TV on the floor? Boy math. Unlike the lighthearted nature of "girl math," this trend's sarcastic beginnings have taken a darker turn; woman have started using the trend to call out potentially predatory behavior, hypocrisy, and questionable decisions from men. Some examples address performative female allyship while others speak to subjects like abortion, gaslighting, and more. It's taken on such a serious tone that even political figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar have used it to critique their peers. This is all to say that trends not only transform quickly on the internet, but can gain scrutiny as they evolve into a whole new conversation.
What brands can learn: Brands, be sure to monitor trends thoroughly and accordingly. While #BoyMath is a big conversation right now, its many iterations make jumping on this trend potentially risky. While this trend started in humor, it has since evolved to reveal the massive weight gender holds in our society and in social-born conversations (think: the recent “Roman Empire” trend). The main idea here: be sure to approach both boy and girl math dialogues with caution before you chime in.
