What it is: It all started when a woman documented a Tinder date gone wrong. Well it went right....until he stole her Tabis. The fashion girls and gays are shook that someone would dare. The saga continued and the woman's shoes were eventually returned by the man in question. But the larger cultural conversation and internet was ablaze. People began memeing about protecting their Tabis, explaining to their heterosexual boyfriends what the shoes are, and sharing their own dating nightmares. In the world of electronic dating, will anyone ever know peace?
What brands can learn: This is another example of how one person's story can start with a niche interest, go viral basically overnight and start an internet moment. This grew into so much more than just the Tabi thief. While the gateway was memes about Tabis, the story turned into other dating horror stories and how online dating unifies us all. This is an important indicator to brands to always look at what the human truth is behind a viral moment and conversation. Whether you knew what Tabis were and had yours stolen , or had to pick up the check when a dude flaked, we can all share a bad dating story and relate to each other's simple pain. Fans were flooding to comment sections to share their own nightmares, make a meme out of sympathy, or even become the internet detective to help this person track down the thief. The internet is a community first and foremost on social media, and when we bare a universal truth, we find others show up to support.
