Coconut Tree Meme 🥥🌴
What it is:Â Shortly after President Joe Biden announced he has official dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, democrats in support of Harris began using the coconut and palm tree emojis to show off their support for her. The set of emojis is being called "the coconut tree" and it originates from a May 2023 speech Harris gave at a White House event for advancing opportunities for Hispanic Americans. In her speech, Harris spoke about an anecdote from her mother that explains that none of us living in a silo. Her mother in the story gives the metaphor that none of us just fall out of coconut trees. "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you," Harris continued. The moment quickly became a meme online as it highlighted Harris' sense of humor and the big laugh she is now known for. Now, it has resurfaced again as a symbol of support for Harris from those who want to see her become the next President of the United States.
What brands can learn:Â As language on the internet continues to grow and people continue finding ways to deliver big messages in both subtle and none subtle ways, it is important for brands to remain deligent about what everything means. Emojis are often used to convey something silly and simple but when used within a specific context or within a specific combination with other emojis, their meanings can change to make them a huge political statement, take for example the watermelon emoji and how it's being used within the context of the Israel Gaza War. Always be sure to quite literally examine the context of certain emojis before using them to avoid making a statement about your brand that is not aligned with the brand's values or has not been vetted before use.
