A deeper dive into a subject that is impacting culture on a macro level, beyond just the social space.
A Brat Summer
What it is: Charli XCX recently released her new album “Brat” but it’s not just her songs that are capturing attention but the album cover itself. It is a lime green background with brat in lowercase letters that is slightly blurry. She even changed all of her previous album covers to match the Brat simple aesthetic.
Social users have taken this cover and ran with it, creating their own versions and meme-ifying it on Twitter/X and Instagram. Users are taking this lime green background and are adding any and all sorts of text over it, or simply finding lime green objects in everyday life and adding the brat text over it. Charli also announced a deluxe album in a similar manner with a simple white background and the same black lower case text. User’s were quick to make more parody’s in this style as well. These covers and announcements have been talked about and criticized on social heavily and in response Charli posted an updated graphic of the cover that included countless pop culture moments that only a chronically online person would pick up on (which is a lot of us).
What brands can learn: The association between the album and a specific color is an excellent way to get people to continue the conversation of the album without directly referencing it by name, yet everyone knows what you are talking about, it's immediately recognizable. Charli strategically chose a very specific green that is not super widespread so that when people see it, she and her album are the first thing that comes to mind. It’s a great example of attaching your brand to something not directly related to it. Additionally, from the countless parody’s made of the album and the deluxe album announcement, it is clear that social users love an inside joke that they can easily participate in. The memes that stemmed from this release were simple, funny and effortless. Brands can activate in these conversations and inside jokes but need to do it in an ownable, unique way. If your brand has ties to these types of music fandoms or an aspect of the joke like a specific color it's a great opportunity to get in on the conversation but if there are no ties and you are unable to tap in then it's okay to appreciate from afar.
