Absurdism goes Experiential
What it is: 'The Sphere' has kept those online enthralled since the $2.3B project opened to the public earlier this month, as the structure is intended to be used for film, music and sporting events hosted in Las Vegas. However, the feature that has caught the attention of the internet is the 360-degree jumbotron which makes up the outside of the sphere, including over 16K LED panels.
So far, the sphere has been used to celebrate Independence Day in style, promote the beginning of NBA's summer league and has mostly been the topic of discussion amongst brands and users, as absurdism trades in the screen for The Strip in Las Vegas.
What brands can learn: According to PQ Media, experiential marketing took a huge hit during the pandemic, but it has also been the sector to recover the quickest, with 11 percent growth of the sector in 2022.
Furthermore, experiential ad spend is “projected to outpace that of overall advertising & marketing investments and US GDP by three-to-six percent.” One of the fastest-growing sectors of marketing continues to expand rapidly, expecting to reach pre-pandemic spend levels by 2024. Brands can leverage experiential activations to personify the brand and messaging, directly engage with the audience, or they can just be silly for the sake of drawing attention to themselves. Brands like Duo Lingo, Mattell and the NBA have recently received huge buzz on social through providing fan experiences.
