The U.S. House Has Passed A Bill To ...
What it is: The US House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to pass a bill that could lead to a nationwide ban against TikTok, one of the world's most popular social media apps. While this bill would still need to pass in the Senate, the future of the app is uncertain and the general sentiment amongst social users is that there is bigger fish to fry in United States politics than banning an app that many users enjoy. In typical internet fashion, social users are joking about what the U.S. House of Representatives will ban next by utilizing the headline format "The U.S. House Has Passed A Bill To ..." and filling in the end of the sentence with what they, in their personal opinion, think should be the next thing to go.
What brands can learn: This is a trend that highlights headline fatigue, and demonstrates social users trying to cope with an unpopular government decision by joking about them on the internet. While this trend is not particularly brand-safe to participate in, the learning here is that the internet continues to bring a sense of humor into situations that are not ideal and it is important for brands to read the room. Is it APPROPRIATE for a brand to speak during this time even if it is not addressing the elephant in the room? It is imperative that brands continue to gauge the state of the world before using their voices as to not become the next headline for the wrong reasons.
