April Fools’ Day Is Back. Here’s What Brands Are Up To:
What it is: Brand socials’ favorite holiday is back. While some say April Fools’ Day is pretty much dead IRL, on social media this is a special day for brands to prank, joke, and confuse their followers all day long. You’ve probably already gotten a glimpse of what brands are up to today as most began hinting at their pranks and jokes last week, but in case you missed it, here’s a brief recap of everything that’s going down. 7-ELEVEn introduced a new flavor of sparkling water. Sour Patch Kids are kids no more, they’re all grown up. Sweetgreen spiced things up by launching an After Salad Kit. Tinder placed a job ad for an important new role in the company.
What brands can learn: April Fools’ Day is the perfect day for brands to make the impossible, wild, and downright unhinged a reality. While many brands go all out for the day, your April Fools prank/joke doesn’t always have to be a huge lift to get a reaction from your audience. If you’re a brand looking to get into the spirit of the holiday - whether at the last minute or next year - make sure to keep the insight of your prank specific enough to your audience, but broader enough to be understood by even one of your most casual followers.
