Boys Who Sew & "Sew Bros" 🧵
What it is: A growing community on the TikTok is helping to rewrite the gender stereotypes that come with making clothes. The hashtag #BoysWhoSew has 53.5 million global views, up from 51.5 million (or +2,220%) in the past 12 months. What else? #Sewing has reached 20.5 billion — yes, billion — global views, a 90% increase from 9.7 billion just a year prior. The sewing revolution comes on the tails of young men wanting to tailor their own wardrobe and, in the process, they're rewriting the narrative of what men should like and enjoy. Historically, women have dominated the world of clothing for centuries, if not millennia. Many strenuously made clothes for themselves and their families by hand up until the 1860s when sewing machines emerged. A familiar, gender-based division of labor, by which men specialize in market work and women in domestic work, followed and has since been hard to shake. This era of "sew bros" has not only taught men the value of their clothes, but that their craft is chipping away at gender binaries. Sewing = agency.
What brands can learn: Brands, this trend speaks to our society's growing desire to move beyond gender barriers and freely create. Individuals not only seek mediums to self-express, but want to customize the experience too. 'Fit checks take on a whole new meaning when the clothes on your back were made by yours truly. And with men at the forefront of this sewing revolution, it's a reminder that expression is fluid and gender stereotypes are out of style. This is all to say that typically female spaces like fashion, beauty, & home require diverse representation. Talent & creativity shouldn't have barriers and #BoysWhoSew proves that.
