Non-Playable Characters on TikTok Live
What it is: TikTok creators have been taking to the app's Live feature to mimic NPCs, or "non-playable characters": the background characters in video games that have been pre-programmed and cannot be controlled by players. @PinkyDoll has become a popular NPC-mimicking TikToker and has caught attention from the likes of Cardi B, Trisha Paytas, and more. She is now known for her NPC streaming performances on TikTok Live. She often uses catchphrases like, "Ice cream so good" and "Yes, yes, yes!" There’s a meticulously curated, eerily lifeless repetition to PinkyDoll's movements and glitching words - much like NPCs might do while awaiting interaction in a video game. Often, her character does randomly nonsensical things like using a hair straightener to heat popcorn kernels.
What brands can learn: With the rise of AI technology, we’re also seeing a rise in creators blurring the lines between what is genuine human interaction and what is meant to appear technologically generated into the social content they are creating for fans. Creators are not only leaning into tech innovation to assist in their content creation, but also to entertain and intrigue followers on what might not be based in reality. Brands should consistently look at what's happening in the world and ensure that their current content is adapting to the recent leaning into AI or digitally-created media. This trend shows us that sometimes embracing new concepts of reality can be turned into moments of levity which can look a bit chaotic - but it’s totally fine!
