The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Continued
The war between Israel and militant group Hamas is entering its 5th day as Israel continues to respond to Saturday's attacks by striking areas in Gaza, reducing buildings to rubble. Electricity is expected to run out in Gaza soon, as fuel already has, and humanitarian aid groups are asking for a safe corridor to deliver supplies to civilians. The war has claimed over 2,100 casualties which is expected to continue rising.
In a statement yesterday, President Biden confirmed Americans are among the hostages taken by Hamas, as well as confirming 14 US citizens are among the victims. While Biden has no plans to send U.S. troops to the region to support Israel, he has sent Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to discuss additional needed resources.
Demonstrations around the world have sparked additional tension outside of the region with supporters of both Israel and Palestine holding rallies in various cities expressing outrage and sadness over the escalating conflict. As misinformation spreads across social media, schools and community centers are urging parents to reduce screen time for children citing potential harm scrolling past graphic violent content.
