PBS's Resident Librarian
What it is: Over the last few years, TikTok start Mychal Threets has become popular because of his "library joy" movement on social. Threets is a California-based librarian who started his creator journey in 2020 and has since blown up on TikTok (783K followers), Instagram (801K followers) and Twitter (150K followers). During 2023, his followers started to tag PBS and PBS Kids in his comment section, trying to draw attention to the creator, with the hope of the PBS team recognizing that Threets would be a great creator to partner with to bring back Reading Rainbow. This back and forth between Threets fan-base and the PBS social accounts continued for almost a year. Then, the social team decided to take this to leadership, and in late March, Threets announced that he was now the Resident Librarian for a social media series that would be available on the PBS and PBS Kids TikTok account.
What brands can learn: The story of Mychal Threets, the TikTok sensation turned PBS Resident Librarian, is a fascinating look at how online buzz can translate into real-world opportunities. It’s amazing to see how Threets’ journey from a California librarian to a social media star, with hundreds of thousands of followers, caught the eye of PBS, all thanks to his fans’ relentless tagging and campaigning. This whole saga shows just how much power there is in a dedicated fan base and the magic of social media in connecting people and organizations. PBS’s decision to bring Threets on board is a perfect example of being in tune with the audience's voice and leveraging social media’s dynamic landscape. It's a clear reminder that listening to your community and being open to new partnerships can lead to exciting ventures and fresh content that resonates with viewers.
