Project Coconut 🥥🌴
What it is: “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context in all in which you live.” This iconic question and statement was made by Vice President Kamala Harris back in May 2023 and it quickly went viral, becoming a huge meme among Gen Z. Now that Harris is set to run for President, Gen Z has declared this as Project Coconut, riffing on Trump’s Project 2025, and has taken this viral moment to new heights with countless edits and remixes of her speech with popular music circulating. But Project Coconut does not stop there. Harris and her HQ have fully leaned into and embraced Gen Z meme culture and social antics such as tapping into Charli XCX’s brat summer after Charli herself tweeted “Kamala IS brat” on her personal page. The coconut also has quickly become a symbol to show support of Harris and her campaign. Many social users are impressed with Harris and her team for this strategy to tap into the meme world and embrace how the younger generation is currently acting on social media with some deeming her the meme candidate.
What brands can learn: While politics is an area brands steer clear from, the more important message here is how massive an impact meme culture has on social and how deeply it resonates with Gen Z. Meme culture and the way it is used on social is a language of its own to Gen Z and tapping into that allows brands to reach this audience in a fun way that shows reliability and relevance. More importantly it shows a brands ability to actively listen on social and what the conversation is and provide their audience with content they will actually enjoy. Memes are shareable, enjoyable and unserious, and if a brand is able to emulate this in their content they can build an engaging relationship with their consumers.
