What it is: Recently the Empire State Building started beef with the Chicago Bean on X after the Bean reopened. While it was under construction, The Chicago Bean had been closed from the public, and once it opened back up the Bean tweeted about the news, causing The Empire State Building to quickly quote the tweet with a meme “clap if you care,” emphasizing that this news was meaningless to them. This quickly turned heads and made headlines as accounts like PopCrave and NBC Chicago News reported it. The Empire State Building has continued this beef with the Bean across their platforms and is coming for other Chicago-oriented accounts online like the Chicago Sun-Times. This has generated massive amounts of buzz online from the sheer shock value of a building targeting another landmark.
What brands can learn: We know that brand beef always entertains social users and enlists fun conversations in comments but the battle of city landmarks is unexpected to most. This unusual approach to a feud has turned into increased engagement and a prevalence in cultural conversation. The element of surprise is not a new tool on social, but when done correctly and sustained it can see new fans and a rise in passion for the brand. Additionally, expanding the bit across platforms prolongs user interest and extends the conversation to new audiences. Finding unexpected yet ownable ways to do something like this that align with your brand is a refreshing opportunity and can create buzz.
