What it is: Tonight is the Met Gala, an annual event held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This event happens every year on the first Monday in May, commemorating the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual exhibit. This year's theme is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. This is a huge cultural event in the fashion world, becoming a pop culture phenomenon each year with an exclusive guest list. The guest list is hand-picked by Vogue's Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, and the criteria for an invite is only known by Wintour. She has been the chairwoman of the event for nearly 3 decades. Her goal was to make this event the Super Bowl of red carpets, the highly anticipated pop culture event of the year, which it has become under her direction and innovation.
What brands can learn: The Met Gala is one of the biggest fashion events of the year. Celebrities bring their fashion A-game to fit the theme. As celebrities walk the Met Gala carpet, social media users are always quick to share their opinions on the best outfits of the night and if they go along with the theme and compare past years’ themes and outfits. This event draws in a vast audience, who come together to share their thoughts on social, a conversation that brands can easily tap into. The Met Gala is an event that dominates cultural conversations. If brands can activate that conversation in an ownable and organic way, it can reach a large portion of their target audience. Massive cultural events bring up new memes and conversations that will dominate feeds, providing lots of reactive content for brands to tap into.
