Club Penguin: the Original Holy Grail of Fashion
What it is: The TikTok fashion scene is defined by its rapid evolution and trendsetting nature, with items and styles quickly gaining popularity and influencing countless users. Writer, Elizabeth Pagano draws the correlation that this phenomenon is reminiscent of Club Penguin, an online game where players' avatars could be deemed stylish based on their clothing choices and ability to keep up with the latest trends set by other players. Much like TikTok, being considered "cool" on Club Penguin was contingent on one's ability to follow and adapt to the ever-changing fashion landscape dictated by influential players. On the surface, being popular in Club Penguin seemed to be about having a good personality. But, just like on TikTok, it was really about knowing how to use the platform well. You had to spend a lot of time there and watch how other people used it. Since the early days of the internet, there have always been ways to influence fashion. Club Penguin might have been one of the first places where this happened. In the world of Club Penguin, dressing up your penguin avatar was a personal expression of style, with each player having their unique approach. Despite this individuality, there were still dominant trends that shaped the community's fashion landscape, much like the influencer culture on TikTok. Tastemakers within Club Penguin set the tone for what was considered stylish, influencing others with their outfit choices. Additionally, the game's "Penguin Style" catalog contained hidden items that added an extra layer of excitement for players, who collected clothing items like prized possessions. These exclusive items contributed to the sense of clout within the community, where having a diverse and layered outfit was prized over cohesion. While there wasn't a marketplace for trading clothing items, the value of clout within Club Penguin was undeniable, making it essential to not just possess trendy items, but to wear them in a bold and attention grabbing manner.
What brands can learn: Just like how special items in Club Penguin made players feel important, brands can create limited edition products to make people excited and feel like they're getting something exclusive. Also, by understanding what specific groups of customers like, brands can make products that these loyal fans will really enjoy. This approach not only fosters a sense of appreciation among customers but also strengthens brand loyalty and fosters lasting connections with the target audience.
