What it is: It's time for college and Gen Z is ...confused how all this works. TikTok is exploding with relatable videos on the insecurity and fears that are natural in a new environment. Videos are featuring candid and humorous content on how trying the college orientation is, and the dysphoria that comes from being in an isolating, challenging, and scary new chapter. How do we make friends? Am I the most awkward person alive? What if I want to tell my roommate to shut up? These are all questions that Gen Z is asking while poking out that maybe they're the awkward one, or that we're all in the same boat.
What brands can learn: Social media is no longer a polished space. Gen Z, especially, is chucking shame and embarrasment out the window and keeping it real. College is hard and a huge adjustment, and Gen Z is tackling it like they do for most big changes: online. But instead of the flawless, edited, curated feeds of yesterday, they're creating social content rooted in humor, authenticity, relatability, and even community building. This generation is less afraid to share insecurities. They're finding solidarity in their comments and running to TikTok for advice from their peers. Gone are the days of pretending everything is under control. It's okay and empowering to be messy, authentic, and you.
