What it is: This trend started as a comedic way for Gen Z to embrace their ridiculous tattoos. Growing up, it was drilled into many Gen-Zers’ heads to never get a tattoo because it looks bad or they'll regret it. However, tattoos are increasingly popular with Gen Z and nearly 50% of young people older than 18 have a tattoo (Source: YPulse). This trend is a way for Gen Zers to laugh at their own decisions and share those experiences with other like-minded individuals. This trend has since expanded into a variety of iterations, some being more serious and heartfelt like showing a locket with a picture of your significant other inside. Regardless, this trend has evolved into a way for young people to share other parts of their lives online.
What brands can learn: Older Gen Z'ers are starting to embrace the cringe. The older they get, the more they recognize that the decisions they've made could be deemed as cringe or embarrassing, and they are okay with that. Social media has recently been serving as a space where young people feel empowered to share silly stories or decisions they've made and relate to others. Sometimes brands on social are viewed as cringeworthy or trying too hard to relate to younger generations. Just like Gen Z, brands should start to own their cringe in the same TOV that Gen-Zers do. Accepting cringe is now a part of being cool and relatable to the younger generations and by doing so, brands can continue to make themselves relevant.
