The Taylor Swift + Taylor Lautner Relationship to Friendship Pipeline
What it is: With the release of Taylor Swift's re-recorded album, Speak Now (Taylor's Version), fans are discussing Taylor's exes who inspired those songs 13 years ago. One of the exes in particular— Taylor Lautner— has done the impossible and instead of becoming a villain like other exes (Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, etc)— he’s actually become a Swife fan favorite. Fans were excited to re-vist "Back to December", an iconic Taylor Swift song about Taylor Lautner. 14 years post breakup, Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner now appear to be besties. He recently starred in her new music video and onstage at her concert. Taylor Swift described him as one of her closest friends and Taylor Lautner praised the person that she is. Fans have become obsessed with their relationship its progression into full bestie status.
What brands can learn: In the past few years, Taylor Swifts’ album re-releases have become major events alone, dominating feeds for consumers and brands alike. Up until this release, the trend has been to unabashedly sh*t on every ex boyfriend of Taylor Swift, but this time there’s more nuance to it. It’s important when trendspotting for a particular fandom to pay attention to the details that matter to the fans. What may seem minuscule as a casual listener/ pop culture consumer matters a LOT to dedicated fan bases. And approaching these fandoms with authenticity shows that a brand is connecting beyond just a one off opportunity.
