Look Between 2 Letters On Your Keyboard
What it is: Earlier this week, a new trend emerged on the platform X where social users began to encourage others to look between certain letters on their keyboard in an attempt to decipher a punchline. For instance, users are prompted to "Look between H and L on your keyboard." The letters between "H" and "L" are "JK," as in the acronym for "just kidding." While some of these posts have a clear punchline, other users have taken a nonsensical approach by tricking others to look down at their keyboard when their prompt does not lead to a message.
What brands can learn: This trend demonstrates that the lifecycle of trends nowadays is getting shorter and shorter. Social users are becoming vocal in showing their disdain for fads even just a day or two after hitting the timeline. Additionally, people are calling out this trend usage as "engagement farming," a term recently popularized by a post put out by Elon Musk (the current owner of X) calling out users who participated in this on X would be banned. Aside from the hypocracy of the X handle then participating in the so-called behavior, this goes to show the importance of trend sensing along with gauging sentiment. With the life cycle of trends decreasing it is imperative to catch emerging trends before the audience grows tiresome of seeing the content on their timelines. It is also important to read the room, and if your content is not approved in time, it could be better to sit this one out rather than being called out for being the late majority/laggard.
