We deserve each other… me and BOQ

What It Is: “We deserve each other… me and boq” is a line from the box office blockbuster movie Wicked, but more recently it's become the rallying cry of an army of fans establishing their own place on the FYP called “Boq Tok”. Boq, played by Ethan Slater, is the love interest of Nessarose, Elphabas younger sister, who sings this now very famous line. But why have fans focused solely on this moment? There are a variety of explanations ranging from the fame the actor portraying him holds to just finding the name and pronunciation comical. Regardless, Boq Tok has fully been established extending into the real world through executions like a Boq lookalike contest and thousands of videos of fans recreating or lip-syncing THE line.
Brand Takeaway: What’s important to note about Boq Tok is that it was not the first, or the only, trend to come out of the monumental cultural moment that Wicked has become. Like many other cultural phenomena, multiple trends have stemmed from the original inspiration – with runoff commentary and spin-off trends for individual characters and moments continuing to pop up. Just because you missed the initial “holding space” meme doesn’t mean your brand is out of the running. It is of the utmost importance for brands to stay vigilant in these cultural storms and find their unique ways in as opportunities arise; as the saying goes, “wait for the second wave to come”.
