A deeper dive into a subject that is impacting culture on a macro level, beyond just the social space.
‘Suspect’
What It Is: Originally started by TikTok momfluencer Tash Gershfield, the #suspecttrend has since gone viral. At its core, the challenge exposes people for their flaws all while bringing participants together through humor. The format goes like this: one person jogging, another filming and acting as a police officer describing a “suspect” on the run. The key is to switch off who plays the “suspect” so each person gets a proper roast. Some videos show husbands & wives poking at their weird habits while others display groups of friends exposing their questionable dating antics. It’s reached celebrities too with those like TV producer Shondra Rhimes, former NBA players like Charles Barkley & Shaquille O’Neal, and even the members of Dancing With The Stars adding their own takes.
Brand Takeaway: It’s clear that the trends that continuously win on social are not only customizable to unique human behavior, but provide levity. The internet is where people want to be real, but also find comic relief in their quirks, fatal flaws, & trauma. Doing so puts all individuals on an equal playing field (celebrities, influencers, athletes) deserving of a bit of scrutiny. What’s made the ‘suspect’ trend really take off is the type of “allegations” or insults that come to light among participants, proving just how niche and specific “red flags” can be. For example, thinking that “ankles are the best body part,” not listening to Anita Baker, or having the build of “an American Girl Doll.” Regardless of the roast, each and every person is “guilty” meaning that no one can escape imperfection, so why have any shame!
