What It Is: What sounds like a trend centered on women in male dominated work industries who’ve faced misogyny, think again. In a shocking & unique twist, #WomenInMaleFields has become a spoof on male dating behaviors with women sharing real/fake instances playing “reverse uno,” if you will. Examples include acts of ghosting with a surprise birthday DM or, for those in relationships, a snark reply to a chores request. While some have used the trend to actually highlight double standards in the workplace like science or medicine, the main focus is on the “dumb sh*t” men do (hence the sound added by many users). Behaviors of note include ignoring texts, lack of sympathy or attention to emotional vulnerability, & being told to smile, to name a few. It’s a savage side of the app that’s bonding women together by their shared disgust & disappointment over men’s habits. Considering the #IHateMyBF memes that went viral this fall, it’s clear that many women have found communities on TikTok where their grievances are real & validated.
Brand Takeaway: For those brands in tech, finance, or STEM, this trend is *not* for you. While this format is a form of women’s empowerment, it’s rooted in sarcasm that gives these varied situations levity. Of course, approach is up to interpretation given the way that CoStar & Duolingo have entered the conversation, but doing so is mainly centered on real experiences of real women. An important note? Men are quickly flipping this trend on its head, co-opting it to deflect bad attention & justify their actions. Unsurprisingly this hashtag has started to take a life of its own, mutating as it reaches the masses, so it’s important to note its roots in satirical feminism. And, if you’re to hop in on it, know your audience. Will your followers be offended by your commentary or will your brand’s way-in feel authentic? At the end of the day, it’s always about interpretation & execution.
