American Women Consider The 4B Movement

What It Is: Not long after the re-election of Donald Trump as POTUS last week, social media was flooded with videos of American women discovering and speaking about the 4B Movement. Originating in South Korea in the wake of the #MeToo movement in the late 2010s, the 4B Movement calls for women to refrain from dating or marrying men, having sexual relations with men, or having children with men as a form of protest against misogyny, gender discrimination, and violence against women.
The 4B Movement — whose name comes from its four tenets that start with “bi,” the Korean term for “no” — was searched over 500,000 times after the election results were announced as women are fearful of what will happen to their reproductive rights under Trump's Presidency. Though this movement has been criticized for excluding groups of women such as trans women, women who are married, or those who already have children, it empowers some women to exercise their right to opt out of heterosexual relationships while reproductive rights are under threat in many states.
The Brand Takeaway: While dating and relationship content is a prominent part of social media culture, the 4B Movement is not a trend or something to be leveraged by most brands. While it may seem wacky or extreme, it’s a serious movement with its own cultural and ideological intricacies, and its resurgence in the U.S. at this time reflects a deeper concern among women about their safety, rights, and well-being.
Even if a brand normally engages in political conversations, it’s important to understand what this movement is and use caution when engaging with audiences who are expressing fear about the future of women’s and other rights. Future policy announcements from the incoming administration may incite further protest movements and will be something to look out for during this transition period.
On a broader level, many women are just fed up with the modern dating scene and male-driven narratives about relationships. Read the room, and use empathy and self-awareness when discussing these topics. Always make sure your messaging isn’t tone-deaf or missing the mark — as we’ve seen before, it's far too easy to misstep and make things worse.
