What It Is: When it comes to social media it’s quite simple to see how a community can be formed. By following an account or brand you become an active part of that brand's community, or fandom, and are now just one amongst thousands, or millions, with a passion just like you. However, throughout the past year we’ve seen these communities exist past just the online comment section with large groups arranging meetups amongst themselves to unite in the real world. The most recent of these was the viral “Timothee Chalamet Look-alike Contest” that occurred in Washington Square Park in New York City this past weekend. The event ran smoothly for the most part, aside from the gathering being too large and being told to disperse, and this is usually the case as we’ve seen success in other social media meetup stunts like the famed “Cheeseball Man”, or infamous and heartwarmingly charitable “Ryan Meetup”. Though, it’s important to note that not all these events run smoothly and without sufficient planning you may see a result like that of Kai Cenat’s New York Takeover in the summer of 2023.
Brand Takeaway: These meetups represent the true reach that social media has past the screen. While you may have 1 million followers on Instagram, does that actually translate into meaningful interactions with the brand? From these IRL meetups brands can take away not only the importance of engaging with fans, but also the idea of evolving content past just social and bringing it to life in the real world. Activations have been around forever, but as we can see with the success of these it appears that the guerilla executions are a vital and driving factor in getting fans to buy in and participate. While announcing a flash meet up may not be perfect for every brand, there is definitely a space to play in when thinking “this piece of content performed well, what next?”. It allows for creativity to flourish, and though everyone can’t win a massive $50 check it’s really the thought and effort that counts.
