(Not So) Subtle Foreshadowing
What It Is: The phrase “the end of a video” seems pretty self explanatory, right? It’s the part of a video which occurs at the end of its run time, and usually the climax. But, what if the end came at the beginning, or better yet, throughout the entire thing? This is the territory that we’ve entered with the latest social trend dubbed “Subtle Foreshadowing.” The concept is simple enough: take a video’s jarring climax at the end and insert it throughout the entire clip with jump cuts. The result leaves you with something random, absurd, but also striking in nature. Whether it be a hard fall at the skatepark or a bottle of Coke and Mentos spraying into someone's face, this format is endlessly adaptable, leaving the door wide open for brands to take part.
Brand Takeaway: This foreshadowing trend is (appropriately) very telling of where social media content is headed. It’s the latest iteration of a trend that emphasizes how short consumers’ attention spans have become. When it comes to brand social, totally thought-out, even chronologically linear social ads feel dated compared to the absurd content that resonates more and more with today’s younger consumer bases. It’s important for brands to acknowledge this when trying to connect with a Gen Z or younger audience, as taking content too seriously can lead to it being easily scrolled past and not given a second thought. One takeaway from this trend is that social videos should always start with a hook; while spoilers used to be something to be avoided, they now an effective way to get people to watch videos until the end.
