gen z’s self-comparison to other generations
What It Is: Gen Z knows they’re different from other generations and aren’t shy about it. Several TikTok trends highlight how their lives compare to their parents’ lives at the same age. While the discussion of “My parents vs. me at 25” by Gen Z has been around for a couple of years, it has grown in popularity as more of Gen Z struggle financially. While many parents were married, homeowners, and starting families in their 20s, Gen Z is often single, living with their parents, and child-free. Economic factors are a big part of this, with many Gen Zers facing tough housing challenges. In 2000, only 25% of income went to rent; today, it’s 40%, with rent costs up 135% from 1999 to 2022, while average income has only grown by 77%.
Moreover, Gen Z is opting to marry and have children later, if at all. Driven by a desire for personal freedom, a focus on education and careers, and evolving societal norms, many young adults prioritize autonomy over traditional commitments. This shift is also reflected in the growing number of women in high-paying jobs, now making up 35% of the workforce in such fields, compared to just 13% in 1980. Despite financial insecurities, Gen Z celebrates the ability to reject outdated societal expectations around marriage and parenthood.
Brand Takeaway: Brands looking to connect with Gen Z should acknowledge the significant impact of economic conditions and evolving social norms on this generation's choices and values. As many Gen Z individuals leave home later and delay starting families, brands must recognize how these changes affect their purchasing power and household dynamics. To resonate effectively with Gen Z, brands need to emphasize their value more than ever, providing options that cater to their unique lifestyles and needs. Gen Z is talking about how different they are — and brands should be, too.
