Forget Common Sense, Make an Uncommon Scent
What It Is: As the newest generation begins reaching the age of “consumer”, new interests and hobbies have naturally popped up along the way. But, it isn’t what you may expect it to be. While in years past kids have become obsessed with things like the newest Lego set or video game console, we have now entered the age of perfume and fragrance (something puberty aged kids aren’t known for). This new trend is unexpected as typically the fragrance world is one reserved for the mature and elegant. However, with TikTok and other social medias filled with influencers available at the fingertips these worlds have become incredibly more accessible, introducing unexpected customers to what could be the next big thing.
Brand Takeaway: From this, brands can learn how to tap into the unexpected and lay claim to new territory in which they have never been seen before. A prime example of this comes to us from Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, the heavenly smelling storefront from your local mall, who came out with their own fragrance, “Knead”, earlier this year to great success. Though, they weren’t the first to dip their toes outside of their domain with Hidden Valley Ranch releasing a beauty line that both tasted and smelled like their product in 2018. Regardless of how wild the execution is, brands should always remember to avoid being predictable or routine and instead drive their consumers to expect the unexpected. A little surprise is always a welcomed addition to everyday life.
