Platform Updates Fatigue
What It Is: Social media users are reacting to Instagram’s latest round of platform updates, which include the ability to leave comments on Instagram Stories, and the sentiment isn’t completely positive. Social platforms are huge hubs for interpersonal communication, but having to divide attention between countless features has left some users feeling a little too connected and asking themselves, “Can I breathe?” Beyond slight tweaks to its interface, Instagram has notoriously overhauled its algorithm in recent months to seemingly capitalize on the success of TikTok as the latter’s potential ban in the United States looms. TikTok has also announced major updates this year - like an Instagram competitor called TikTok Notes - and left people reeling with little follow-up on what a new app for photo posts could look like or when it would become available. While all social platforms naturally evolve over time and need to be attractive to prospective new users, people are feeling digital whiplash from these platforms’ constant changes that seem to be fueled more so by copying their competitors than their users’ needs and wants.
Brand Takeaway: Social platforms will continue to feed us a steady stream of updates to stay current and grab interest away from competitors, and brands should continue to take note of these while understanding that users are feeling genuine fatigue and may not totally care about each new functionality that crosses their feeds. If it makes sense for your brand to post a carousel with twenty images or leave Notes directly on Reels, and it delights your fans, great! If not, you’re not necessarily missing out. Continue to listen to what fans find most valuable about the various social platforms, and remember that, at the end of the day, it’s all about sparking conversation - regardless of which shiny new feature it lives on.
