Cleats On, Cleats Off

What It Is: Who are you after you clock out from work? Is your fashion sense different? Do you have a passion or hobby you’ve been practicing for years? The answer is most likely yes, you’re a whole new person with unique interests that may not be known or relevant to the people you work with every day. The same can be said for professional athletes, and through the latest “cleats on, cleats off” trend on TikTok we’re getting an inside look into their lives off the field. Athletes are sharing photos of them suited up on the field with the copy “cleats on”, before transitioning to a second screen with the copy “cleats off” and sharing photos of their life outside of the game. These photos can include things like everyday fashion, charitable events, and even hobbies like gaming.
Brand Takeaway: By exposing parts of their personal lives, these athletes have exposed themselves to new communities (or fandoms) of people, and in turn, these communities rally around new members joining them in their shared passion. The same effect can be seen for brands when playing in the fandom space. If a brand shows up like another person (or fan) rather than a brand forcing their way into the conversation, it not only comes off as more authentic to the audience, but exposes your brand to a vast number of social users who may not have been aware or interested in your account prior.
