QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER ABOUT CHANNEL STRATEGY
The TL;DR: Algorithms now prioritize predicted interest over followers, making discoverability critical. Brands once built channel strategies to drive follows; but if followers matter less, does channel strategy still?
Brands once built channel strategies around followers. Today, algorithms favor interest-based distribution: ranking content by relevance and value to non-followers. So it’s a fair question to ask yourself: is channel strategy a practice of the past? Here are some evaluating questions DC’s Social Strategy Department is asking ourselves:
Do followers still matter?
Less for reach, more for trust. Focus on high-quality, format-first content and treat every post as an “audition.” The algorithm decides what scales and performs well via discovery.
Is your audience different on each platform?
If yes, channel strategy matters. If no, prioritize a focused content strategy. Audiences aren’t siloed, but behaviors differ: Instagram may skew aesthetic, TikTok more entertainment. Platform cues still matter.
Should brand voice be consistent?
Yes. Consistency builds memory. Anchor in a core voice, then adapt by context. Over-optimizing for platform tone can feel inauthentic.
Is it bad if someone sees a post twice?
No. Consumption is fragmented; repetition builds recognition. Be intentional: reuse content for launches, education, and key moments, adapting as needed.
Does creative suffer when tailored per platform?
It can. Don’t change ideas just to fit platforms. Strong concepts travel, adapt lightly (length, copy) to enhance clarity, not force differentiation.
