LESS BUZZ, MORE BALANCE: GEN Z’S MOVE BEYOND ALCOHOL
The TL;DR: Gen Z and millennials are drinking less, not because partying is over, but because their values are shifting toward wellness, control, and curated social experiences. As social culture moves beyond alcohol, brands need to rethink how they create connection and community.
For decades, drinking was the default social setting: bars, parties, happy hours. Alcohol was the main character. But Gen Z is moving toward more controlled, intentional environments. Think run clubs over bar hopping, sober raves over late-night chaos, and curated dinner parties over blackout weekends. Nearly half of drinkers, especially Gen Z and millennials, say alcohol feels less appealing than it used to. Two in five believe drinking is less common today, more than 40% don’t see alcohol as an important part of their lives, and 49% of Americans are actively trying to cut back.
This shift is values-driven. Gen Z aspires to a life that looks and feels “put together.” On social media, that shows up in Sunday resets, marathon training, wellness routines, and the aesthetic of #CleanTok. Hangovers don’t fit into that identity. This generation is constantly optimizing: physically, mentally, socially. They’re “health-maxxing,” tracking sleep, prioritizing mental health, experimenting with sobriety, or in some cases choosing cannabis over alcohol because it feels more aligned with wellness and comes with fewer next-day consequences.
Going out isn’t about chaos anymore: it’s about curated experiences. And that transformation is playing out visibly on social media: early-morning run meetups, mocktail tutorials, cold plunges, community-based hobbies, and content centered around feeling good, not recovering.
Brands need to move from selling consumption to facilitating belonging. The opportunity is in building ecosystems around identity, ritual, and community on social. That could look like creating content series around routines and resets, partnering with wellness creators, or designing IRL moments that feel intentional and shareable. Messaging should evolve from indulgence and excess to clarity, balance, and self-expression. The brands that win will create culturally relevant spaces (digital and physical) where people feel seen, connected, and part of something bigger, with or without alcohol.
