A deeper dive into a subject that is impacting culture on a macro level, beyond just the social space.
Is It Already Fall, Y’all?
What It Is: Each year when August hits, social users are divided as some eagerly embrace early fall vibes while others cling to summer's final weeks. The "August 1st marks fall" movement has gained serious momentum this year, with decorations going up and #Summerween trending. This premature seasonal shift may reflect a deeper craving for fall's cozy comfort after an especially brutal summer full of extreme weather, divisive political news, and no unifying monocultural theme as strong as 2024’s Brat summer or 2023’s Barbenheimer. While some people are ready to move on from an underwhelming 2025 summer and head straight to pumpkin spice season, others are pushing back to hold onto their beachy summer aesthetic. Retailers fuel the debate by stocking Halloween merchandise earlier each year, making fall's creep into late summer impossible to ignore. By mid-August, there’s pressure to either give in to the allure of fall or try to squeeze every drop from summer.
The Brand Takeaway: Autumn creep is real and accelerating. For brands, understanding how their audience feels about the seasonal divide can help steer content toward appealing to early adopters or summer defenders. This might look like starting fall campaigns early to capture eager audiences who are mentally already there, or extending a summer campaign to affirm summer loyalists. Of course, you can also aim to address both sides and stoke the debate. Seasonal impatience can also suggest that consumers are seeking comfort and emotional relief, so brands that provide that nostalgia or coziness associated with seasonal shifts can really resonate with people at this time.
